According to E.C. Alft's 1996 “Books and More, A History of the Gail Borden Public Library,” "Readers choices changed over the years. Among the authors with the most books listed in 1876 catalog were Charles Dickens, James Fenimore Cooper, and William Thackeray."

Also from Alft's book, "The catalog printed in 1889 listed 10,008 volumes, including Saunier's “Treatise on Modern Horology” and “Watch Maker's Hand Book,” Piaget's “The Watch” and Willard's “Practical Butter Book.”
