Suburban Skyview: Holiday lights bring a festive feel to downtown Palatine

For some, seeing the glow of Christmas lights releases the “holiday spirit.”

In fact, psychologists say seeing colorful lights this time of year has a positive affect on our mood, making us feel festive and happy. The warm glow of white lights can bring a sense of calm while the bold, large and colorful retro lights bring back memories of our childhood.

According to the Library of Congress, Thomas Edison invented the first strand of electric lights. He hung it outside of his Menlo Park laboratory during the 1880 Christmas season for all to see. Two years later, Edison’s partner, Edward H. Johnson, hand-wired a string of 80 colorful bulbs to wrap around his Christmas tree.

Many towns in the suburbs celebrate the holidays with decorations, tree lightings and visits with Santa. Palatine held its tree-lighting ceremony on Nov. 18, when Mayor Jim Schwantz threw the switch to light Towne Square Park.

The holiday cheer spreads throughout downtown, with many trees and lamp posts lighted and decorated.

Christmas Eve is the perfect time to take a drive through your community if you need a boost for your holiday spirit.
