Townhouse left uninhabitable after basement fire in Rolling Meadows

No injuries were reported in a townhouse fire in Rolling Meadows Monday night that fire officials estimate caused $100,000 in damage and left the home uninhabitable.

Firefighters were called to the townhouse complex on the 0-99 block of Alton on Auburn just before 8 p.m. when the resident reported smoke detectors going off in the basement and heavy smoke.

Firefighters were hampered because the main floor was “compromised and falling” when they attempted to make entry. Eventually firefighters were able to attack the fire that appears to have originated in a crawlspace.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Three townhouse units attached to the fire damaged unit did not sustain damage, fire officials said.
