Suspect in custody, others sought in Vernon Hills home invasion

Indiana man facing charges in connection with Oct. 28 break-in

One person is in custody and at least one more suspect is being sought by police in connection with a home invasion Oct. 28 in Vernon Hills.

Carlos E. Kidd, 44, of Evansville, Indiana, is being held in Lake County jail charged with home invasion, residential burglary, criminal trespass and unlawful restraint. He’s scheduled to appear in court Jan. 2 for a preliminary hearing.

Vernon Hills police responding to a report of someone screaming for help at the Plymouth Farms subdivision said they found a woman outside with her hands bound behind her back and her head duct-taped.

According to the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, the woman told police she had been sleeping when someone broke into her home and restrained her.

The woman told police the suspects rummaged through her bedroom and the rest of the house and she believed her prescription medication and electronics were taken, according to the state's attorney's office.

Through surveillance video, investigators got the Indiana license plate for a vehicle registered to Kidd, prosecutors said. The same vehicle had been located and seized by Evansville police. Investigators were able to place Kidd near the woman's home at the time of the offense, according to the state's attorney's office.

Associate Lake County Judge Theodore S. Potkonjak granted a petition filed by prosecutors to detain Kidd pending trial as a danger to the community.

“We believe it was somehow a targeted offense and not a risk to the community,” said Vernon Hills police Chief Patrick Kreis. “We are actively working to apprehend at least one more offender in this case.”

Kreis said the woman did not suffer serious physical injuries.
