New bridge opens up in Waterfall Glen

A newly installed pedestrian bridge is open to visitors of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve near Darien.

The bridge carries the preserve’s main trail over Sawmill Creek.

“I know our residents are excited to be on that bridge all winter,” DuPage County Forest Preserve President Daniel Hebreard said.

The old bridge over the creek was washed away in late February 2022 by “high water conditions carrying large slabs of ice,” according to a district memo.

The district replaced it with a taller bridge spanning 65 feet.

Further restoration and seeding of the bridge site will be completed in the spring, a district engineer recently told forest preserve commissioners.
