Performance and ageism

Ageism is one of the last “ism” that we should challenge. The recent Daily Herald articles on unnecessary driver’s test requirements for older adults call out the reality that ageism is in play. It’s been around for a very long time. Ageism is most often invisible or made into a joke. (Just take a look at greeting cards for 60 or 70 year-olds. They’re not funny, they’re offensive. They reinforce stereotypes.) Understanding the needs of a situation, effective decision making and the ability to perform as required are what’s important. This is key, whether you’re driving a car or serving as U.S. president.
