Highland Park shooting suspect lands in maximum-security jail pod

Sheriff says he violated jail rules by threatening a guard

The man accused of killing seven people in the mass shooting at Highland Park’s 2022 Independence Day parade was placed in a maximum-security pod of the Lake County jail after threatening corrections officers, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Crimo III became upset Nov. 6 when officers did a random search of his cell for contraband, Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said.

He was moved to the jail’s administrative segregation unit, where detainees are assigned to single cells. Time outside the cell and phone privileges are reduced, and they are not allowed contact with other detainees.

If he does not commit further rule violations, he will be returned to his previous cellblock on Jan. 4, Covelli said.

The 23-year-old suspect faces 21 counts of first-degree murder and dozens of other charges stemming from the July 4, 2022 shooting. He is due to go on trial in February and intends to serve as his own defense lawyer.
