Charity donates protective vest to Buffalo Grove K9

Mac, the Buffalo Grove Police Department’s K9, will receive a protective vest from a charitable foundation, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

K9 Mac, a 2-year-old sable German shepherd who joined the Buffalo Grove force in June, is handled by Officer Shannon McMillon, a member of the police department since 2014. Mac specializes in narcotics detection, tracking and locating criminal suspects and missing persons, and conducting searches in different environments.

The body armor, aimed at protecting the dog from bullet and stab wounds, is one of more than 5,379 vests provided to K9s in all 50 states by the charity.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies.
