Endeavor Health Edward Hospital aims to be top choice for cardiac care with new facility

Endeavor Health Edward Hospital's new cardiovascular health institute will make it easier for patients to take care of their heart health needs.

The free-standing institute, expected to open at the Naperville hospital campus in 2025, will be the first cardiac ambulatory surgical center in the Chicago region, hospital officials said.

It will offer outpatient services for cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures typically done in hospital settings. The 71,000-square-foot facility also will offer a larger cardiac rehab facility, medical offices for two physician groups and make way for a new entrance to the main hospital.

“For patients and customers of the system, this is going to be transformative,” said Curt Pascoe, vice president of real estate development with Ryan Companies.

The Naperville hospital, which is ranked second in the state for cardiac procedures, partnered with Ryan for the project. Ryan Companies will own the building and lease it back to the hospital. The partnership offers hospitals a cost-effective way to leverage capital and bring new services to the community, Pascoe said.

He added, Ryan Companies has worked on two other projects with the hospital in Elmhurst and Woodridge.

Endeavor Health, formerly known as Northshore — Edward-Elmhurst Health, also is expected to open a 170,000-square-foot cardiovascular institute pavilion at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview next year.

Northshore, which now operates its hospitals under the Endeavor Health banner, started its cardiovascular institute program in 2015 and has since seen extensive growth in cardiovascular services. This year, Edward Hospital expects to perform more than 10,500 cardiac procedures and have more than 21,000 cardiac patient encounters.

“Our vision is to be the No. 1 cardiovascular program in the Midwest,” said Yvette Saba, president of Edward Hospital.

The first two floors of the Naperville facility will be dedicated to medical offices and the third floor will house the ambulatory surgical center, which will include two cardiac catheterization labs. Some of the surgical services available at the new center include coronary stenting, cardiac catheterization, angioplasty and pacemaker procedures, Saba said.

She noted some cardiac procedures are moving to outpatient settings, offering “more convenient and positive” experience for patients. The $70 million project, which includes a 15-year lease with Ryan, also will free up more space in the hospital for cardiac patients with more acute care needs, Saba said.

“We're achieving two of our goals with this building,” she said.

The new facility also will make way for a new drive that takes patients and visitors to the main entrance of the hospital. Currently, patients and visitors must wind their way around the back of the hospital to get to the front entrance.

The city of Naperville also is making improvements to the riverwalk so staff and visitors can have access to it from hospital grounds.

“We're very excited about that,” said Saba, adding access to the riverwalk will compliment the healing garden at the hospital. “Having this is one more alternative for people ... it's a great benefit.”
