Two more contested Illinois House primaries appear as filing period closes

Seventeen additional 2024 general election races for suburban seats in the Illinois House and Senate have materialized in the week since the first day of filing Nov. 27, but only two new primary contests have emerged.

The filing period closed Monday evening, beginning a weeklong period in which objections to nominating petitions can be submitted.

Republicans Hannah Billingsley of West Chicago and Aris Garcia of Streamwood will face off March 19 for the chance to take on Democratic incumbent state Rep. Maura Hirschauer of Batavia in the 49th House District on Nov. 5, 2024.

And Geneva Public Library Trustee Arad Boxenbaum will challenge incumbent state Rep. Matt Hanson of Montgomery for the Democratic nomination for the 83rd District Illinois House seat.

"Through thousands of conversations with neighbors, I have learned so much about issues impacting our community and areas where improvements need to be made," Boxenbaum said in a statement announcing his candidacy. "I am running to bring active, engaged leadership as a full-time legislator, and I have the experience to do so,"

Five contested general election races for suburban Senate districts emerged after the first day of filing, but none since. A dozen new contested general election races for suburban House districts have appeared since last Tuesday morning.
