Suspect charged with drug-induced homicide in Naperville man's death

A man awaiting trial on heroin-dealing charges is now accused of the drug-induced homicide of a Naperville man.

Shawn Smith, of the 5700 block of South Marshfield Avenue in Chicago, was indicted Nov. 28 on nine counts of drug-induced homicide and two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, according to DuPage County court records.

Smith, 32, is accused of supplying the heroin and fentanyl on which Keagan Frasca, 23, overdosed Nov. 27, 2022.

According to an affidavit filed to seize Smith's vehicle, Naperville police found text messages on Frasca's cellphone between him and the person they believed had supplied the narcotics that caused his death. Investigators texted that number to arrange to buy drugs, and Smith showed up at the meeting on Dec. 5, 2022, according to the affidavit.

Smith was then charged with being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He is being held on $30,000 bond at the DuPage County jail on that case, although his lawyer recently filed a request to lower the bond.

According to the police officer's affidavit, Smith "admitted knowing the overdose victim and having provided them with heroin daily including before the overdose at the deceased's residence."

Smith's next court date is Thursday.
