Sheriff: Man killed by SUV in driveway

A 63-year-old Hampshire man died Wednesday after he was struck by an SUV driven by his 85-year-old mother in Plato Township, authorities said.

An initial investigation indicates her son, Steven Ackman, walked in front of the SUV when she was repositioning the vehicle into a residential driveway, Kane County sheriff's officials said.

Her foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal, according to the sheriff's office. The 2016 black Lincoln SUV moved forward, hitting Ackmann. Medical attention was administered at the scene, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

It's unclear how fast the SUV might have gone before and during the crash.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the home on Romeo Drive just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. Kane County social workers also responded to the home.
