U-46 is launching a Newcomer Parent Support Group
Elgin Area School District U-46 is launching a group for families who have arrived in the United States from another country.
The Newcomer Parent Support Group will hold its first meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the U-46 Welcome Center, 1019 E. Chicago St. in downtown Elgin.
During the meeting, parents will learn about U-46 and the various ways that families can keep in touch with the district, principals, and teachers.
They also will get a better understanding of their role in their children's education and how they can support their children's academic journeys, as well as helpful community resources that are available. Childcare will be provided.
The sessions will be interpreted in Gujarati, Hindi, Panjabi, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Urdu. Those families that do not speak these languages are also welcome to attend as the district will offer an alternative way for them to engage in the session.
Those interested should save the date for the next two sessions: Thursday, Feb. 15, and Wednesday, April 17.
The sessions are being organized by the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department, and questions can be directed through "Let's Talk."
This is an opportunity to connect with other newcomer parents and gain valuable knowledge and skills that will help you support your children's academic success.
