Oakton's Empty Bowls fundraiser aids local food pantries
You can buy handcrafted soup bowls and simultaneously support local food pantries Saturday, Dec. 2, at Oakton College in Des Plaines.
The college's annual Empty Bowls sale and fundraiser is set to run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 1600 E. Golf Road, in rooms 1606 through 1610.
More than 1,200 bowls and other ceramic pieces will be available, organizers say.
The Empty Bowls event has raised more than $400,000 for food pantries since it launched in 2004. The event's goal is to raise awareness of local and worldwide hunger, according to a news release.
Admission is free. A $20 donation will get you soup in a bowl you can choose and keep.
Additional pieces also will be for sale.
A raffle and a silent auction are scheduled, too, and "Empty Bowls at Oakton" T-shirts will be for sale.
Empty Bowls is sponsored by Oakton's ceramics club.
All proceeds will benefit Des Plaines Self-Help Closet and Pantry, Interfaith Action of Evanston, Maine Township Food Pantry, New Trier Township Food Pantry, Niles Township Food Pantry and Northfield Township Food Pantry.
Visitors should use Golf Road to enter the campus due to a different event that will close a section of Central Road.
