Elgin man convicted of sexually assaulting a child

A Kane County jury convicted Sergio Varela of Elgin of predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse on Nov. 16.

Prosecutors alleged that between 2014 and 2017, Varela sexually assaulted the victim, who was younger than 13. He knew the victim. The charges were filed in 2021.

Varela faces a sentence of six to 74 years in prison, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office. He has to register for life as a sexual offender.

His bond was revoked when he was convicted, and he is in the Kane County jail awaiting sentencing. His next court date is Jan. 12.

Varela, 38, lived in the 800 block of Morgan Street.
