Palatine Township opens for property tax appeals

Palatine Township is open for Board of Review property tax appeals through Dec. 12, for the 2023 tax year and residents of the township can file an appeal at the township Assessor's Office or directly with Cook County for the taxes on their home.

"There are a number of ways you can file an appeal," said Bill Pohlman, Palatine Township assessor. "You can set an appointment at our office by calling (847) 358-6164. If you don't need an appointment, we have forms outside our front door. You can also send an email to appeals@palatinetownship-il.gov. In the email, include your name, address, phone number, email address as well as your PIN number. In all cases, we'll file the appeal for you. Finally, you can file directly with the Cook County Board of Review at appeals.cookcountyboardofreview.com."

In 2022, the Cook County Assessor's Office reassessed Cook County's North suburbs. As a result, North suburban property assessments increased a total of 30% for residential properties and 38% for nonresidential properties. Higher real estate values and new construction contributed to this growth. The Board of Review, an assessment appeal agency, changed residential assessed value by -2% and nonresidential assessed value by -20%. After the Board of Review analyzed the assessments, the final growth in North suburbs was adjusted to 28% for residential properties and 11% for nonresidential properties.

Local taxing bodies determine the amount of a tax bill. The school district, village, library, township among others all request funds in what is called a levy for their annual budgets. Homes are assessed by size, construction and similarities to other homes in the community. In Cook County, homes are assessed every three years and the property tax is based on the results in conjunction with the levy from the taxing bodies.

Residents can appeal their property taxes during a specified month twice a year with the township or the county. The township is now in the second round of appeals with the Board of Review. No matter the result, residents can appeal during both appeal periods.
