Aurora celebrates Diwali, Festival of Lights

Thousands turned out in the City of Lights to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

The city of Aurora's Indian American Advisory Board hosted its ninth annual Diwali celebration at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora.

The annual holiday, also called the Festival of Lights, celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil.

Thousands of Indian Americans were joined by neighbors of various nationalities and religions, educators, and elected officials to celebrate Diwali.

The popular event was marked by a special proclamation issued by Mayor Richard Irvin and traditional and contemporary cultural performances by youth and adults.

It also featured a vendor's fair that allowed guests to shop for cultural clothing and to eat traditional Indian cuisine.
