On Mundelein High proposed referendum

I'm troubled by the huge amount of money MHS says it needs to provide students with a comfortable environment. $150 million seems like an incredible sum for just shy of 270,000 square feet of construction and renovation. Especially since there is no land acquisition involved.

To put things into perspective, consider this: Let's divide that 270,000 by 100. That leaves 2,700. Would you agree that 2,700 square feet would make for a decent sized home in this area. Probably even a little larger than average.

Now let's price that home. Factoring in land, building, furnishings and landscaping wouldn't you agree that $500,000 would make for an extraordinary, beautiful and comfortable place to live.

To build 100 of these homes would cost $50 million. And that's at retail pricing.

Now, in your mind's eye picture those 100 beautiful places. If you cannot, consider just over half of Sheldon Woods' spread of 187 homesteads.

How do you feel about a $200 million dollar price tag now?
