Bad choice for speaker

We're all relieved that the chaos and paralysis in the U.S. House of Representatives has finally ended, although one might understandably be apprehensive about how radical minority Republican members will continue to disrupt things going forward.

As the legislature gets back to work, however, it's disturbing that the gavel has gone to someone who previously subverted the Constitution by attempting to overturn a legitimate election. Mike Johnson voted against certifying the 2020 election results and participated in a bogus lawsuit that even the highly conservative Supreme Court deemed unsupportable.

These treasonous actions should disqualify him from holding any public office, let alone such a high leadership position. Instead, Mr. Johnson and the other legislators who ignored the law in an attempt to allow a power-hungry narcissist to hold onto power should be prosecuted along with the other Jan. 6 insurgents. It's past time for sensible, law-abiding Republicans to retake control of the party. Until they do, our republic is at risk.
