Antioch man facing felony charges in crash that killed wife, grandson

A 71-year-old Antioch man whose car crashed into a Metra train in December has been indicted by a grand jury on felony charges related to deaths of his wife and grandson.

Anthony Shemberger is charged with two felony counts of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle.

Patricia Shemberger, 75, of Antioch, and Noah Kucinski, 13, of Lockport, died from injuries suffered in the crash, authorities said at the time. Anthony Shemberger was hospitalized with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Lake County State's Attorney's Office said they could not comment on the investigation, which was conducted by Metra police.

The crash was witnessed by a Lake County sheriff's deputy who was at the rail crossing at Wilson Road, just north of Larkin Lane, waiting for the train to pass just after noon on Dec. 18, 2022.

The deputy said the driver failed to heed the crossing's warning lights and drove through the gate and directly in the path of the train. The deputy said he did not see the driver of the car slow down, authorities said at the time.

Shemberger is scheduled to appear before a Lake County judge for an arraignment hearing Nov. 2.

An attorney is not yet listed for Shemberger, according to the county's public records database.
