Maybe founders wanted 'continued service'

I must take exception to the Oct. 8 letter by Steve Weber titled “Government strips away freedoms.” Mr. Weber uses Switzerland to promote his support for guns in every home. My position on that is irrelevant in this case.

However, I find his argument offensive or at least uninformed. The reason there is a gun in every home in Switzerland is because all males from age 18-30 are required continuous Army enlistment or preforming alternative civilian service. Those in the Swiss army train regularly and also have two weeks of active duty each year. If every male in the United States were required to serve 12 years in the military or preform alternative civilian service, I would fully support guns in every home.

Maybe this commitment of continued service is what the founding fathers were thinking of when they referenced “a well-trained militia” carrying muskets when they wrote the Second Amendment..
