Police officers injured during rescue attempt at Aurora apartment fire

A two-unit apartment building on Aurora's west side was left uninhabitable Thursday after an early morning fire.

No residents were injured in the blaze, but Aurora police officers suffered smoke inhalation when they attempted a risky rescue, after mistakenly being told a child was trapped inside the building.

Officials said the fire was reported at 2:51 a.m. at a split-level apartment building on the 900 block of Spruce Street.

Initial reports from a 911 caller indicated a child was still in a bedroom. The first police officers on the scene forced their way into the locked bedroom but retreated due to heat and smoke, officials said. It was later determined that the reported child was actually a 21-year-old who was not home at the time, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

Firefighters who arrived to find heavy fire showing from a second-floor rear window were able to extinguish the flames, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
