Girls golf: Buffalo Grove's Beerheide finishes strong to edge Wallace for regional crown

What a finish it was at the Bonnie Dundee Golf Club on Thursday as Buffalo Grove sophomore Courtney Beerheide caught Barrington freshman Reese Wallace at the wire to claim medalist honors in the Class 2A Barrington girls golf regional in Carpentersville.

Wallace had put up a nifty 1-under par 70 well ahead of Beerheide, who came home sizzling with three birdies on her final six holes to take the individual crown by 1 stroke with a sparkling 69.

“All the credit to Courtney Beerheide,” said Barrington coach Tim Martin of Beerheide who won the Mid-Suburban League crown with an eye-popping 67 last week. “She is playing some of the best golf in the state, no doubt about it.”

Martin's Fillies put up a ‘no doubt about it' victory in the team race, shooting a 292 well ahead of Lake Park (313) and Buffalo Grove (345).

“To shoot a 292 on a tough day where the course was playing long, I was really pleased,” said fifth-year coach Martin, who led the MSL champs to their fourth straight regional crown and ninth in 10 seasons. “Our seniors have so many great memories at Bonnie Dundee so this is really special. They really soaked it in, They've done so much in their four-year runs.”

Wallace led the Fillies with her runner-up 70, followed by seniors Bridget Butler (71), Leah Gadios (75) and Sydney Terada (76).

Top scores for Lake Park were freshman Samantha Rottinger, senior Marisa Levario (75), sophomore Isha Patel (79) and freshman Amaani Patel (86).

BG was paced by Beerheide, sophomore Adriana Aboeia (90), freshman Abbey Foster (92) and sophomore Brooke Wells (94).

Individuals advancing were Wheeling's Sarah Huh (80), Hersey's Ava Johnsen (82), Palatine's Addison Ashford (83), Lake Zurich's Jeanne Yu (84), Conant's Ariel Morrison (88), Hersey's Avery Grove (88), Conant's Gabbi Zyung (89), Conant's Mia Withers (89), Lake Zurich's Maddie Michalak (89) and Schaumburg's Ema Rotaru (90).

Beerheide will now return to the Bison home course (Buffalo Grove) for Monday's sectional.

“She (Beerheide) really rose up to challenge on the back nine when she needed the birdies,” Martin said.

Martin's freshman was right in contention to the end with Beerheide.

“Reese grew up playing at Bonnie Dundee with her grandpa,” he said. “Her game just keeps getting better and better every day. I know this was a special day for her to do this on this course.

“I'm so lucky to coach such talented and dedicated young ladies so driven to continue the great Barrington girls golf tradition, To see how our seniors (Butler, Gaidos, Terada and Breanna Brown) have taken Reese under their wings so she can lead the team in the future, has been such a joy to watch. It seems like Reese is one of the seniors when they're all together. It's a credit to the kind of people these seniors are.”
