Boys golf: Prospect edges Barrington by a shot for regional title
It was as wild as advertised Wednesday at the boys Class 3A regional hosted by Hersey at Old Orchard Country Club in Mount Prospect.
Prospect won the team title with a 286. The Knights held off MSL champion Barrington, which was one stroke back with a 287. The two teams had tied each other in their two previous meetings, including last week at the MSL championship. Barrington had won both previous meetings thanks to the fifth-score tiebreaker.
Palatine had its best day of the season to finish third with a 288. The Pirates were just a stroke better than crosstown-rival Fremd, which had a 289. That one stroke was the difference as the top three teams advance to next Monday's sectional at Mount Prospect Country Club.
Stevenson (300), Hersey (301) and Buffalo Grove (306), also missed the cut.
Prospect was led by Luke Kruger, who shot a 2-under 68. Patrick Raupp followed with an even-par 70 along with Cole Bielecki (72) and Jack Krueger (76).
Barrington was led by Drew Schauenberg, who had a 1-under 69. William Lange (71), Sam Uutala (73) and Alek Lechuga (74) were the other top scorers for the Broncos.
Palatine was led by Pablo Castro, who also shot a 1-under 69. Darrin Dick (71), William Slatkay (73) and Maarten Pederson (75) were the other scorers for the Pirates.
Connor Woodin, who won the MSL medalist title last week, continued his hot shooting Wednesday. The senior shot a 65, with six birdies.
Kruger was second while Castro, Schauenberg and Lake Zurich's Zach Lawler were third with 69s.
At Lake Forest: Libertyville was second with a 308 at Lake Bluff Country Club to advance to the Prospect sectional next Monday.
The Wildcats finished behind regional champion Lake Forest, which scored a 301. Vernon Hills was third with a 317.
Libertyville was paced by Alec Centeno (75), Joey Kistler (75), Ryan Andrews (77) and Quincy Adams (81). Vernon Hills got top scores from Jake Levitan (76), Lundas Hayanhirvaa (79), Henrik Lundberg (80) and Kartik Vasudeva (82). Lake Forest's Tadgh Burke was the medalist with an even-par 72.
Warren was fourth with a 322 and Mundelein fifth with a 324. Warren's Cameron Simmons tied Centeno, Kistler and Lake Forest's Huston O'Neil for second with a 75.
"I was really proud of the way my guys played today," Libertyville coach Kevin Wall said. "The conditions were wet, the wind was blowing, and pins were in difficult positions. Our team has shown a lot of grit this season, and they've proved they're one of the best in the region with their performance today. I'm looking forward to competing in our sectional on Monday and know we can compete for a spot for state."
At Rolling Meadows: Conant ran away with the regional title at Arlington Lakes Golf Club. The Cougars shot a 291 to finish 11 strokes ahead of Lyons.
Conant got a strong performance from Peyton Kittivat, who shot an even-par 70, to finish second. Nicolas Simon tied for third with a 71, while Antonio Gutierrez (73) and Joshua Lee (77) also had a good day. Rolling Meadows' Nico Haber was the medalist with a 1-under 69 with three birdies. Hoffman Estates' Jayden Lim tied Guttierrez for sixth.
At Glenbrook North: Maine South just missed a regional title. The Hawks were second at Heritage Oaks Golf Club with a 293 to finish just a shot behind Glenbrook South's 292.
Maine South was led by Anthony Neumayer, who shot a 1-under 69 to win medalist honors. Adam Drabek and Jack Zone each carded a 74 while Charlie Francis shot a 76 to tie for sixth. Maine West was fifth with a 327.
At Montini: In 2A at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, St. Viator finished second with a 310 to advance to Monday's sectional at Lemont.
The Lions were led by David Koziol (75), Max Maiorano (77), Ryan Kalaway (77) and Vince Chacon (81). Koziol tied for third while Maiorano and Kalaway tied for seventh. Wheaton Academy won the team title with a 302.
At Grayslake Central: In 2A at Pine Meadow Golf Club, Carmel won the team title with a 319 and will advance to the Freeport sectional on Monday.
The Corsairs were led by Griffin Gillespie (76), who was fourth overall. Nathan Stuart (80), AJ Miller (81) and Kevin Crow (82) also powered Carmel.
Lakes was third with a 331 and also qualified for sectionals. Brady Cross (71), who was second overall, led the Eagles.
Grayslake Central, which finished fourth with a 333, was led by Dominic Lucches, who was the medalist with a 2-under 70. Antioch, which was fifth with a 337, was led by Rylan Frazier (78) who was fifth overall.
