No longer unique

The news that Kroger is getting rid of the Mariano's brand name is no surprise. Kroger effectively killed the Mariano's brand soon after it acquired the stores. Mariano's was once a fresh and welcome addition to grocery story options in the Chicago area. Unique offerings, clean and organized stores and a variety of locally produced and sourced products made for a pleasant shopping experience. It was too good to be true. Under Kroger management, Mariano's soon lost its uniqueness and became indistinguishable from most other grocery stores and chains. The pending merger will accelerate this unwelcome trend, leaving consumers with fewer brand and product options.
