Cross country: Jacobs boys, CL South girls take titles at Bartlett

Jacobs boys cross country coach Kevin Christian had every reason to crack a smile.

With finishers at the second, fifth and eighth spots, Christian's Golden Eagles took home the top prize at Saturday's 21st Annual Flyin' Hawk cross country invitational hosted by Bartlett High School.

The Eagles scored 78 points to second-place Conant's score of 106.

"Our first three runners are solid and ran well today," said the Jacobs veteran coach. "We need our fourth and fifth runners to step it up if we are to compete in the (Fox Valley) conference and in the postseason. It is not because of a lack of effort. They are working their butts off."

Jacobs senior Andrew Beyer was the runner-up in the 3-mile race with a clocking of 15:24.4. DeKalb's Jacob Barazza crossed the finish line first with a time of 15:18.8.

"It is a little disappointing," said Beyer. "I was right with him (Barazza) for awhile. My time wasn't as good as I would have liked it."

Finishing in the top 10 for the champions were Maximilian Sudrzynski (fifth) and Matthew Andreano (eighth).

Conant, the team runner-up, placed Gaven Corpin (sixth) and Connor Ariunbat (seventh) in the Top 10. Kyle Corpin finished 11th and Jayden Patel 14th.

"I am very happy with the guys effort," said Conant coach John Powers. "Gavin and Connor have led us the whole season. Jayden was battling allergies because of the weather change. Our front varsity kids ran well."

St. Charles North, fourth with 146 points, was led by Will Stone with an 18th place effort, Wilhelm Lackner was 25th and Noel Sookswat 30th.

Batavia, fifth with 150 points, was paced by Ethan Stone in 15th and Alejandro Jacob 21st.

South Elgin, with a seventh-place finish and 173 points, placed Gael Bibiano (12th) and Logan Lott (13th) in the top 15.

Burlington Central, which got a ninth-place effort from Ryan Kries, was eighth with 175 points.

Cole Tupper, with a solid fourth, led Elgin to ninth place and 215 points.

Bartlett was paced by Luke Regalado in 22nd, spearheading the Hawks to 10th place and a score of 235.

Wheaton Academy got a 31st-place finish from Michael Osieski to finish 11th.

Glenbard North was 13th led by Daniel Prochaska in 39th; Maine West took 14th with a score of 394 behind Gerardo Perez in 63rd.

Maine East (16th) was led by Jonathan Garcia-Hernandez (76th), Larkin (17th) had Cruz Bravo in 101st and Addison Trail (18th) had Nehemiah Varghese in 104th.

Girls race:

Abby Machesky hopes to be in the winner's circle soon, but the talented Crystal Lake South senior had to settle for a second-place finish at Saturday's meet at Bartlett High School.

DeKalb's Korima Gonzalez was first with a time of 18:50.6. Machesky navigated the course in a time of 18:57.

"It was a little disappointing," said Machesky. "I was neck and neck with her (Gonzalez) the first mile. As a team, we hope to do well at the conference meet and at the Class 2A state meet."

Machesky's effort catapulted the Gators to the team title with a score of 46 points.

Also finishing in the top 10 for South were Colette Bacidore (eighth), Olivia Pinta (ninth) and Victoria Pinta (10th). Cecelia Piemontese placed 17th.

St. Charles North, seven points behind the Gators, was second with 53 points. The North Stars garnered five top 25 finishers including Gwen Hobson (third), Camille Sabau (fifth), Norah Dorrance (11th), Tia Kilroy (16th) and Zoe Ulaszek (18th).

"South was a little ahead of us going into the meet," said North coach Shari Hayes. "Our top five were solid."

Waubonsie Valley, led by a fourth-place finish by Mia Bertoni, was third with a score of 126. Katherine Heap was 12th and Lily Baibak placed 14th. Katie Byers was 47th and Greta Salmon took 49th.

With only two runners, Burlington Central got a sixth-place finish from junior Abigail Burke.

She finished in the top 50 at last season's Class 2A meet.

"Abby is running great," said Rockets coach Vince Neil. "This is a great meet for her with all the great competition. There are a lot of very good 3A schools here. She is mentally tough and is very positive. She is a top caliber runner who we expect to do well in the conference and in the state series meets."

Burke is hoping to improve her top 50 finish from last year's state meet.

"I hope to finish between 18 and 30 at the state meet this year," said the Central junior. "I worked hard in the summer and feel I am progressing. I like my finish today and I feel I attacked the course."

Host Bartlett was fifth with a score of 131. The Hawks were led by Alessandra Gregory in sixth, Kristin Farabaugh 15th and Hailey Netzel 21st.

Jacobs, sixth with a score of 142, was propelled by Rylie Warczak in 20th.

Wheaton Academy got a top 10 finish from freshman Addie Painter (seventh) and finished eighth as a team.

South Elgin's Maya Vodenik placed 39th as the Storm took 10th, one spot ahead of Elgin who was paced by freshman Teagan Culver (28th).

Glenbard North was 12th with a score of 337. The Panthers' top finish came from Melissa Gomez (44th).

Addison Trail (14th) was led by Monserat Abarca (51st), followed by Larkin in 15th paced by Brinlee Jimenez in 56th.

Lina Kitner led West Aurora in 92nd.
