Authorities: Hostage taker who was shot in face, arm in Round Lake is recovering

The 33-year-old Round Lake man shot in the face and arm by members of a regional SWAT team Wednesday s continues to heal from his wounds at a hospital under 24-hour police surveillance, officials said Friday.

The man, who has not yet been identified, is expected to be charged with one or more felonies when he is well enough to be discharged from the hospital, authorities said.

The man was shot Wednesday evening by two members of Northern Illinois Police Alarm System SWAT team as he held a woman at knife point and refused multiple requests to let her go, according to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

The 30-year-old hostage suffered minor injures but declined to be taken to a hospital.

Officials said the man and woman lived together in a basement apartment at a home on the 700 block of North Park Road.

The two officers who shot the man are on paid administrative leave, which is protocol.

A task force spokesman said an independent investigation has begun to determine whether the officers' use of force was justified. Once investigators collect all relevant information, it will be turned over to the Lake County state's attorney's office for a final determination.
