Encourage leaders to support Farm Bill
The United States Farm Bill contains many programs that aid the hungry in our country and around the world. This is the year that the bill needs to be reauthorized for another five years.
"Offering of Letters" is a project of Bread for the World. I and other members of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Mount Prospect will be participating in that endeavor by writing letters to our elected representatives urging them to support the 2023 Farm Bill.
Sen. Dick Durban, Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Congressman Mike Quigley will be urged to support a farm bill that will fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) without adding additional obstacles that would restrict access to this vital program.
Also, they will be urged to support incentives which will allow SNAP participants to purchase more fresh fruits and vegetables. Studies show that when people have the opportunity to purchase nutritious foods, they will.
And the officials also will be encouraged to strengthen international nutrition programs that help millions of women and children around the world.
Everyone should have access to nutritious food to help them lead healthy, productive lives.
