Week 1 football roundup for Cook and Lake County
Here's a look back at some of the highlights from around the area on Week 1 of the high school football season.
Wheeling 25, North Chicago 13:
New Wheeling head coach JeMarcus Moody picked up his first win as his team pulled away from a 13-13 tie at halftime.
Ashton Schneider broke off a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Justin Ghibea added a three-yard run in the fourth quarter for some breathing room.
Ghibea also had a two-yard touchdown pass to Fillippo Schiavoni and a six-yard touchdown run in the first half.
Stevenson 38, Kenosha Bradford 21:
Stevenson used a powerful running attack to rally from a 21-17 halftime deficit.
Running behind Albert Murrillo, Ethan Aghakhan, Michael Panich, Owens and Andrew Timmons the Patriots amassed 289 yards on the ground. Frank Costabile rushed 25 times for 263 yards and 4 touchdowns while Fatman Thorndyke had 13 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Maine West 14, Marmion 13:
Tommy Delaney tossed a swing pass to One'll Miller-Smith who then crashed over two defenders for the tying touchdown with 20 seconds to play. Jason Salazar added the conversion to lift the Warriors to the win.
Ben Cooper also had a one-yard touchdown reception from Smith for Maine West.
Antioch 42, Schaumburg 13:
Martin Cohen scored five consecutive touchdowns as the Sequoits had a successful trip to Schaumburg.
Cohen had touchdown runs of 80, 22 and 79 yards. He also caught a pair of touchdown passes from James Sheehan that covered 42 and 56 yards. Nick Day opened the scoring for Antioch on a three-yard run.
De LaSalle 29, St. Viator 23:
The Meteors crashed St. Viator's hopes with a late touchdown. The Lions were led by Michael Tauscher, who had 11 carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Cooper Kmet fired a touchdown pass to Driese Raap. Gabe Glodz added a 31-yard field goal.
Hillcrest 14, Elk Grove 12:
Danny Pasterski (8-of-20, 139 yards) connected with Dylan Berkowitz for a pair of touchdown passes.
Unfortunately, the Grenadiers were unable to convert their conversion opportunities and fell in Country Club Hills.
Pekin 19, Rolling Meadows 7:
Pekin just had a little too much for the Mustangs. Colin Ford had a solid game in his first start at quarterback. He was 16-of-27 for 190 yards including a 33-yard TD pass to Sean Kerr, which tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Vinny Piccolo rushed for 100 yards on 14 carries.
Wauconda 14, Hinsdale South 10:
Wauconda rallied with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to hold off Hinsdale South.
The Hornets built a 10-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Langston Love to Alec Mller. The Bulldogs roared back in the third quarter on a touchdown runs of 37 and 38 yards by Connor Vansselow.
Hinsdale South drove inside the Wauconda 10 late in the game but failed to score.
Libertyville 22, Lemont 13:
Quinn Schambow was 17-of-21 for 211 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers picked up a solid home win. Schambow connected with Blaise Lavista, Stevan Gavric and Luka Nikolich on his touchdown tosses.
Grayslake North 14, Vernon Hills 8:
Mitchell Hughes ran for a touchdown and threw for another as the Knights prevailed.
Hughes had an 18-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give Grayslake North a 7-0 lead. Hughes, who threw for 129 yards, then had a 22-yard touchdown pass to Eli Woyat to make it 14-0 in the third quarter.
Lake Forest 37, Lakes 7:
Ean Ankney had the lone touchdown for Lakes as they fell to Lake Forest.
Mundelein 28, Grant 7:
Mundelein broke away from a 7-7 tie in the second quarter to get the win in Fox Lake.
Waukegan 22, Round Lake 0:
Round Lake ended up hosting this game after it was moved for safety reasons from Waukegan. The Bulldogs then posted a shutout on their new hosts.
Carmel 24, Crete-Monee 0:
Carmel went down to Crete and blanked the 11th-ranked team in the state in Class 6A.
Bolingbrook 41, Grayslake Central 6:
Bolingbrook spoiled Brett Pearlman's debut as head coach for the Rams.
Highland Park 37, Leyden 0:
David Finfer threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns as the Giants blanked the Eagles.
Addison Trail 39, Maine East 6:
Addison Trail led 12-6 early in the second quarter and pulled away for a convincing win.
