Cherry picking morality

A letter in the Aug. 10 edition of the Daily Herald submitted by Robie Johanson states that the U.S. is a secular society and laws banning books and abortion are impositions of specific religious beliefs on the general public. Aren't all laws based on specific moral beliefs? How is the killing of an innocent unborn child different from the killing of another innocent human being (universally forbidden under law). Don't we all agree that stealing, lying, fraud, etc., are unlawful? I suggest we can't cherry pick the morals we'll accept from those we won't when determining what is lawful behavior.
