The TAWANI Foundation Commits $100K to TimeLine Theatre Company
The TAWANI Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that provides support in the areas of arts and culture, historical preservation, health and wellness, LGBTQ+ and human rights, education and environmental initiatives, announces a donation of $100,000 to support the construction of TimeLine Theatre Company's new home in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Under the grant, the TAWANI Foundation is also including an additional $100,000 in matching funds.
After renting for 25 years, Timeline Theatre's permanent location will feature a 250-seat black box theatre, exhibit galleries that enhance the production experience, dedicated space for Living History students through Chicago Public Schools, education programming, expanded social spaces, an office and production space and opportunities for future expansion, including a second theatre. The new location will be in Uptown at 5035 N. Broadway.
"Investing in the construction of TimeLine Theatre Company's facility further helps the connection of history and art," said Colonel (IL) Jennifer N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired), founder of the TAWANI Foundation. "The Theatre is working to educate students, present stories that link the past, present, and future, and explore topics that can facilitate healthy debate. With all the incredible work that is being accomplished by this award-winning theatre company, a new home will create even more opportunities."
The mission of TimeLine Theatre Company is to present stories inspired by history that connect with today's social and political issues. As a collaborative organization, the Company produces provocative theatre and educational programs that engage, entertain and enlighten.
"TimeLine Theatre Company is honored to have support from the TAWANI Foundation to create the first home of our own in Uptown," said TimeLine Artistic Director PJ Powers. "More than just a theatre, this new cultural asset for Chicago will be a gathering place for art, education and community engagement. Furthering the legacy of Uptown as an entertainment destination, this welcoming and inclusive new facility reflects a deep investment in TimeLine's mission and vision to be a prominent civic and artistic leader in Chicago and nationally, distinguished for creating experiences that make connections across our diverse communities and spark reflection and dialogue about the intersection of past, present, and future. We are enormously grateful for TAWANI's investment at a moment where mid-sized cultural institutions like TimeLine need such inspiring philanthropic leadership."
The Living History Education Program was established in 2006 and brings TimeLine's mission to Chicago Public Schools, working with students on creative exercises related to historically inspired stories on TimeLine's stage and elsewhere in literature. During arts integration residencies of six to 13 sessions, students of this program will explore connections between history, art and their own lives, developing critical thinking and communication skills. Since its inception, more than 9,000 students have actively explored history through Living History.
