On church and state

A July 31 letter from John Strauss should have been written in capital letters and bold font. His opinion on the separation of church and state hit the nail on the head. A refresher course on the intention of our founders is needed for our legislators.

Too often legislation takes place that is passed insidiously with too many personal religious overtones. Religion is strictly a personal matter and no one should force their religious views on anyone else, especially in public schools or through legislation.

The act of banning books and abortions is an imposition of one's religious views on others. Just because you don't like a book doesn't mean someone else shouldn't read it. Books encourage knowledge. Your religion and opinions are yours, not to be foisted on others. It is against what our founders had in mind for our nation.

To quote Mr. Strauss: "we live in a secular country where truth, respect and equality under the law are our shared aspirations. Do not tread on these ideals."
