Keep your mints handy for annual Garlic Fest Aug. 16 in Highwood

The intoxicating scent of garlic and the promise of a good time will once again bring the crowds back to Celebrate Highwood's 12th annual Garlic Fest from 4:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in Everts Park, 111 North Ave., Highwood.

Held in conjunction with Highwood's Evening Gourmet Market, this foodie fest showcases a plethora of dishes with the taste (and scent) of garlic, with a garlic trivia contest, live music and family-friendly activities.

Garlic is known for its culinary and medicinal purposes. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample various garlic creations, from out-of-the-ordinary garlic-infused chocolate, cookies, ice cream, fudge and cocktails, to the classic, savory options like pizza, sandwiches, sauces and spreads.

The crowd will be able to vote for their favorite with a competition for the best Sweet and Savory Garlic Creations in the People's Choice and Judge's competitions. Attendees can cast their vote at the Highland Park Bank and Trust/Bank of Highwood-Fort Sheridan ballot booth located next to the band shell. Winners will be announced at 8 p.m.

In addition to garlic offerings, a wide range of local produce, gourmet cheeses, baked fare, pastries, ethnic delicacies and local artisan wares will also be on-site.

The event would not be complete without live music from 6-9 p.m. by the Bill Pantle Band, featuring classic Sinatra, The Great American Songbook.
