Blackhawks to host public memorial for Rocky Wirtz at United Center

The Wirtz family and the Blackhawks announced Monday that the United Center will host a public memorial event for Rocky Wirtz, who died July 25 at age 70 after a short illness, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Wirtz, owner and team chairman from 2007 until his passing, shepherded the team to three Stanley Cup championships. Sexual assault allegations from a former player also came to light under his tenure, leading Wirtz to apologize after refusing to take questions about the matter in a 2022 town hall-style meeting with media and fans.

First-come, first-served seating will be available for the formal program, and the arena will remain open until 3 p.m. to allow all to pay their respects.

Free parking will be available in Lot K. Gates 6 and 7 on the south side of the building will open at 9:30 a.m.
