Man charged with drunkenly fleeing police, causing crash that hurt woman
A Carol Stream man is being held on $2 million bail, accused of drunkenly driving away from police and causing a crash that injured a woman.
Alvin Thompson Jr., 43, of the 700 block of North Gary Avenue, is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated fleeing and eluding, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses, including resisting a peace officer, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
Police reported that at 7:28 p.m. Sunday they were called about a man using a gun to threaten a person. The caller said the man left in a Mercedes C300.
When police tried to stop the Mercedes, Thompson drove off on West Elk Trail, went through a parking lot and back on to Elk Trail, the news release said. He then drove more than 75 mph, went through a red light at Gary Avenue and hit a vehicle at Gary, seriously injuring a 27-year-old woman, authorities said.
Police say Thompson then ran away.
After arresting him, officers reported finding a loaded handgun on the dashboard of the driver's side of the Mercedes. They also alleged he showed signs of alcohol impairment, including having glassy eyes.
To be freed pretrial, Thompson would have to post $200,000 as bond and wear an alcohol monitor.
