Naperville's National Night Out starts with community kickoff/movie night July 31

More than 45 neighborhoods are signed up to participate in the 2023 Naperville National Night Out Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Also known as "America's Night Out Against Crime," it typically takes place on the first Tuesday of August each year. It is a nationwide event designed to heighten drug prevention and crime awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.

During National Night Out, residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and other city personnel. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks all occur simultaneously throughout Naperville and across the nation.

Community kickoff

Not every neighborhood in Naperville hosts an event, so the city, in partnership with the YMCA, hosts a free communitywide event for everyone to enjoy on Monday, July 31.

The community kickoff and movie night will begin at 6 p.m. outside the Fry Family YMCA, 2120 95th St.

It features free family fun, including entertainment and giveaways. Attendees can play in a bounce house, participate in games and activities, check out police equipment, and visit food trucks before setting up blankets or chairs to enjoy an outdoor showing of Disney-Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." at sunset.

In the event of rain, the movie will be shown indoors.

Neighborhood events

Cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will occur simultaneously in dozens of neighborhoods throughout town Tuesday, Aug. 1. Note that events may start earlier or go later than posted. City departments will only visit locations between 5-8 p.m.
