Driver in grave condition after morning crash near Antioch

Lake County authorities said a 38-year-old Schaumburg man was transported by helicopter to a hospital in grave condition after his car crashed with a semi-truck Monday morning near Antioch.

Lake County sheriff's detectives said the Schaumburg man was driving a BMW westbound on Route 173 just before 6:20 a.m. Officials said the man disobeyed a red light at the intersection with Route 45 and crashed into a semi-truck being driven by a 64-year-old Round Lake man.

Officials said the Schaumburg man appears to have been speeding at the time of the crash and that others reported he'd been driving recklessly.

The man had to be extricated from the crash and was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Routes 45 and 173 were closed in both directions for a time Monday morning while officials cleared the scene.
