The Soapbox: Brief thoughts from Daily Herald editors on suburban topics of interest

This editorial is the consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

This week's clippable quote

"I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren't trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom." - Umberto Eco

Summer safety

Now that kids are out of school, you're likely to see them out and about riding bikes, playing with friends or taking the family pet on a walk. When you're driving through your neighborhood, please be mindful and slow down. Come to a complete stop at stop signs, and be patient as kids cross in front of you. Stay alert so kids can have a safe summer.

Debt (and sticker) free

It didn't seem possible a little more than a decade ago when Palatine was staring down more than $100 million in debt. But by 2026, officials say, the village will be debt free. The news comes less than a year after the village eliminated an unpopular vehicle sticker tax. The fiscal turnaround is a credit to village leaders' commitment to living within their means.

Look for ways to carry on

The Illinois High School Association board voted this week to cease holding state tournaments for debate and boys gymnastics, citing low participation across the state. There's ample suburban interest, however, so we hope local coaches and schools can find a way to continue competitions under different auspices.

Another successful preps season

With the high school baseball and softball state titles awarded last weekend, the preps season has officially come to a close. From no-hitters to clutch touchdowns - it's amazing how many successful performances suburban athletes produce each year. We can't wait to see what excitement fall sports will bring.

Small victories

With some justification, Medicare and Medicaid have a reputation for being plagued with fraud. But that doesn't mean authorities stand by and do nothing. Consider the lengths to which a Lombard doctor went to hide his mole-removal scheme and the sharp-eyed auditors who saw through it. Such efforts help protect taxpayers and valuable programs they support.

Sharing our space

It's not just the occasional coyote, deer, mountain lion, bison or bear that get our attention wandering into the suburbs. Lately, suburban residents have found themselves divebombed by a more-common creature - red-winged blackbirds protecting their nests. However civilized we make the suburbs, we humans share space with an abundance of wildlife.

Take no day for granted

Sunday is Father's Day, a time to say thanks for everything Dad's done for you and taught you. This editor's dad has been gone for 31 years. Now with kids of my own, I try to make sure they show appreciation for everything their father does for them. My take-away: Take advantage of the time you have with your dad; you really never know how long it will last.

Happy Father's Day!

Whatever you do today, dads, remember this is your day. Bask in the love and appreciation of your family. Be proud of all you've accomplished for them. Then, sit back, relax and be proud of yourself. With it all, have a great day.
