Arlington VFW Post 981 Awards Scholarships at June Meeting

Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 981 is awarded the 2023 VFW Post 981 Wally Luettschwager Memorial Scholarship Grants to Eva Mason and Julia Olson. Additionally, a scholarship donated by the daughter of former Post member, Bob Henderson, was awarded to Morgan Lamb. At the award ceremony, held on June 7 at the Post's monthly meeting Eva and Morgan each received $3,000 while Julia received $1,500.

Eva Mason is a resident of Arlington Heights and graduated in 2023 from Buffalo Grove High School. She will be attending Purdue University where she hopes to major in bio-medical engineering. This major was inspired by her older sister's recovery from bacterial meningitis. Both grandfathers served during the Korean War, one Army and one Navy, and one was a member of Post 981 before he passed away.

Julia Olson lives in Arlington Heights and just graduated from Rolling Meadows High School, attaining a GPA of 4.0. She is planning to attend the University of Illinois Urbana to major in music performance and ,arketing. She is extremely active in the Girl Scouts and held various leadership positions in her high school activities. Her grandfather served during the Korean War and her aunt is a Navy veteran.

Morgan Lamb lives in Palatine and graduated from Glenbard East High School in 2006. She is attending Harper Community College majoring in business management. Morgan has started a nonprofit organization that gives free haircuts to veterans and the homeless community. She has been active in supporting veteran causes for years. Her father and grandfather served in the military.

Wally Luettschwager was a life-long resident of Arlington Heights who served honorably in the U.S. Army in combat during the Korean War. He came home and was an active member of Post 981 for over 60 years in many capacities including commander.

Bob Henderson was also a Korean War veteran, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds.
