Letter: Treat all humanely
In response to Fran Spielman's and Elvia Malagó's article "Mayor Lightfoot declares emergency on migrants bused from Texas to Chicago" (Daily Herald, May 10), I agree with the article's purpose of addressing that the solution to the surplus of immigrants being shipped over by Texas seeking Treat all humanely shelter and jobs should be handled in a safe, humane way that is fair to these people seeking to live in our country.
With that being said, trying to house immigrants and provide them work will be challenging. However, these people do deserve to be treated respectfully. As Lightfoot states, "We're not just warehousing people. We're not gonna treat them in the same way we've seen Gov. Abbott do, without any regard for their humanity."
Although critical of Gov. Abbott, Lightfoot makes a solid point that the people crossing over should be given more humane treatment. Anyone should have the right to equal protection, whether that's citizens of the USA or immigrants crossing over.
Even stated in the 14th amendment, " ... nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." So, as stated in our Constitution in the 14th Amendment, people, no matter who, should get these rights to live the life they want and in humane conditions.
So, I believe that the immigrants seeking a safe place here will be able to provide for Illinois and help the employment crisis as well. Although it will be difficult to find appropriate housing for the asylum-seekers, there is still hope that we can welcome them with open arms.
