Lacrosse: St. Viator routs Fremd for sectional crown

St. Viator's Nicky Pastore and Cade Faulkner can be a handful.

They can score a handful too.

The duo each scored five goals as the Lions rolled past Fremd 22-4 Friday in the Stevenson sectional final in Lincolnshire.

St. Viator (21-1) won its first back-to-back sectional titles in school history. The Lions will meet Loyola in Tuesday's supersectional at Hoffman Estates at 5 p.m. Loyola beat New Trier 14-6.

St. Viator dominated play in the first quarter. The Lions scored eight consecutive goals before Fremd even got off a shot at the Lions' goal.

Despite that, Pastore said the Lions could have played better.

"We did take care of business in the second half," Pastore said. "But in the first two quarters, we were weren't so hot. Even though we had a lead, we are used to playing better. We were very sloppy early."

Fremd (18-2) tried to stay close as the Vikings played even with the Lions in the second quarter and trailed 11-3 at the half.

Viator exploded to begin the second half, scoring six consecutive goals to send the game to a running clock.

"We started off a little slow for us," Faulkner said. "Then in the second half, we really kicked it into gear."

Emerson McGrath scored three goals for the Lions. Wes Starr and Keaton Franzen each scored two goals while Carson Wilder, Leo Izquierdo, Anthony Tomlin, Franco Caputo, Dallas Starr and Carson Hart also scored for the Lions.

"We have been trying to do everything the right way," St. Viator coach Patrick Gaeger said. "When this team plays its brand of lacrosse we can be unstoppable. Every year it is punch and counter punch. This team is battle tested and they love it. They just answer and answer and answer. It is fun to watch."

Fremd got two goals from Jack Wienke and goals from Nathan Roos and Alexander Zels. The Vikings finish their season with the most wins in school history, a MSL title and their first sectional final appearance.

"We have great leadership on this team," first-year coach Evan Chikeles said. "Great players, great seniors. I couldn't ask for a better team to come in and start coaching. They were motivated to get this far. St. Viator is very talented."
