St. Charles VFW to host Day of Service breakfast May 29
In honor of the VFW Day of Service, the St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 will host a breakfast benefiting youth organizations in the St. Charles community.
It will take place from 7 to 9 a.m. May 29, at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, biscuits and gravy, coffee, milk, and orange juice. Gluten-free pancakes with sugar-free syrup will be available.
The cost is $5 or free for current and former uniformed personnel of public service, Scouts, emergency services, military service members or veterans.
The VFW Day of Service events happening globally during May emphasize the important role veterans play as community leaders and volunteers and inspire others to serve as well.
The St. Charles Memorial Day ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. at Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St. It will feature the Boy Scouts posting colors, an honor guard and an honorary gun salute. It will be followed by flag ceremonies at the South Cemetery (east side of Seventh Avenue, north of Madison); North Cemetery (west side of Route 25/Fifth Avenue, north of Johnor Avenue), and then ending at the Union Cemetery (east side of Route 25/Fifth Avenue, north of Stonehedge Road).
The St. Charles Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10 a.m. starting at Sixth and Main streets and continuing to Riverside Avenue, ending at the Freedom Shrine with a ceremony.
