Letter: Public benefits help all

A letter by Mike Dressendorfer was published recently lamenting that senior citizens pay property taxes that support local schools. The writer's attitude is exactly what's wrong with our society: I got mine so now I won't contribute to you.

Yes, our property taxes help fund our public schools, but opting out because you no longer have kids in school is shortsighted at best.

Seniors still benefit from a good local public school system in attracting homeowners with a desire to keep up good schools which in turn keep up property values.

How would the writer have felt if seniors refused to contribute when his family was able to benefit from good schools?

I am a senior on fixed income who never had children and still saw the benefit of having schools to be proud of. Do we stop supporting libraries because "I don't read" or park systems because "I don't go outside"? Should young families refuse to pay for benefits for seniors? Shaking my head.
