Letter: Procrastination just intensifies problems

I'm increasingly convinced that in today's world, other than outright denial, procrastination is fast becoming the popular delaying tactic to face and deal with unpleasant and painful realities.

Kicking the can down the road means to defer action, a practice many are becoming proficient at. In general, our society continues to put all of its eggs, both hard boiled and soft, in one basket and then, sadly, leaves them unattended for long periods of time. Finally, as the clock ticks closer to the hour, hurried and confused, we scurry to postpone the inevitable by kicking the can down the road.

Fundamentally, we avoid addressing these tasks because of our fear of failure, how complex they are, and being constantly bombarded with everyday challenges, we're just plain tired.

Anxiety is the predictable consequence of us not confronting these basic needs and expectations in a timely fashion. Someone once said, "Life is like a roll of film; it won't develop unless you give it your best shot." In other words, be ready, decisively plan and then punctually respond.

In agreement are the words of Benjamin Franklin, "Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today." This way the future will always be stronger than the past.
