Letter: Financial disclosure critical for officials

We are writing to voice our firm support for retaining Naperville Municipal Code 1-13-1, Disclosure Required, public disclosure by City Council members of relevant campaign contributions in excess of $750. Our allied organizations represent hundreds of voters in the Naperville area.

We believe disclosure is critical to transparency and allows all constituents to understand any possible conflicts of interest from members of City Council. The city must move in the direction of more transparency, not less.

We support refining the ordinance so that it provides greater clarity regarding disclosure of donations. We strongly disagree with eliminating the ordinance.

We believe elimination of the ordinance will result in more conflicts of interest and an uninformed electorate. A move toward less transparency is not the way to decrease the role of outside money in our local elections.
