Tivoli Theatre owners to be honored as 2023 Historians of the Year
On Tuesday, May 2, the Downers Grove Historical Society is hosting a premiere screening of a documentary featuring Willis and Shirley Johnson, the owners of the Tivoli Theatre.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. with an organist playing the Wurlitzer theater organ at the restored historic movie theater at 5021 Highland Ave.
Prior to the screening, the Johnsons will be honored as 2023 "Historians of the Year" at 6:30 p.m.
The "History Happens Here" screening will start at 7 p.m.
The historic Tivoli Theatre has been owned and operated by the Johnson family for over 50 years. The theater is a popular destination for both locals and tourists and has hosted many notable events, including concerts, plays, and movies.
The documentary includes interviews with the Johnsons and their family members, as well as archival footage of the theater. It's a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the Tivoli Theatre and Downers Grove.
There will be a reception following the documentary where theater staff will be available for Q&A regarding the building.
Tickets are free for historical society members and $5 for nonmembers and can be purchased online at www.dghistory.org/tickets.
Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. All attendees must register online.
