Letter: Our limp response to grave threats

An uneasiness is sweeping the country, manifested by a feeling that something is just not right in the affairs of this nation and its people.

District attorneys across the country are more inclined to be lenient toward those who break the law. Criminals are achieving a sense of victimhood at the dire expense of those who are actually aggrieved. Major cities are awash in blood.

All one has to do is read the pages of your daily newspaper to catch my drift or read Chicago's weekend stats on Monday mornings. And on it goes, no end in sight.

Complacency toward the war on drugs gives way to a slaughtering of our young people with loving hearts shattered and forlorn. Fentanyl transported on human mules oozes across unprotected, unsecured borders. And we wonder how our states, wherever we live, are ravaged as if a pariah state is right next door. And our "leaders" don't elevate the issue to the importance it should have.

We as a nation are so afraid of balloons that we let them traverse our skies. Once was enough, but do you really have the confidence you will be protected when those in charge are more concerned about feelings in their ranks or fear over how a foreign entity will react when you try to stand up for yourself?

More telling is one's limp inaction to those threats.

In those countries with one party rule, which we may be fast approaching, there is little regard for your opinions. Where there was once freedom of expression it is now being replaced with "my way or the highway," with no middle ground.

Reason and common sense are being turned on their heads. What we choose or fail to choose in the end will haunt us all. All that will be left is a collective whimper.
