Aurora celebrates Sikh Awareness Month

April is Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, and the City of Aurora honored its growing Sikh community with a special proclamation presentation.

After prayers offered by the head of the Illinois Sikh Community Center, Priest Mohinder Singh, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin presented the proclamation to the dozens of Sikh youth and adults attending the Aurora City Council meeting.

To increase awareness, show appreciation, and combat anti-Sikh hatred, Mayor Irvin encouraged Aurorans to 'get to know your Sikh neighbors not just during April, but throughout the year."

Sikh business owner Ginny Jolly accepted the proclamation on behalf of the group as she shared her idea of the American Dream.

April was chosen for Sikh Awareness Month because one of the most important events in the Sikh faith is Vaisakhi, celebrated on April 14.

Vaisakhi commemorates the founding date of the Sikh religion.

During Sikh Awareness Month, Sikhs are recognized for their faith and rich traditions and for their many incredible contributions to the United States.
