Letters: Don't forget residents near proposed stadium
As the Northwest suburbs begin planning for the eventual arrival of the Chicago Bears, let us not forget the current residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. This area has provided an affordable enclave of single-family homes, condominiums and apartments for those seeking safe neighborhoods, good schools and easy access to public transportation.
The population has a diverse economic and ethnic makeup that local governments should take steps to preserve. While the forthcoming debates over topics such as traffic and infrastructure are important, action should be taken now to ensure that residents are not forced to abandon their communities in the name of "progress."
Measures should be written by our elected officials to preserve the current stock of modest housing and to provide local affordable housing alternatives. These measures should be enacted soon before an entire community is forced to relocate.
