Letters: Do homework on assisted living

Recently after residing six months in an assisted living facility in Lake County. I relocated to a senior living complex.

I would like to provide some insight to anyone contemplating helping a family member get placed in an assisted living facility. Of utmost importance, ask a lot of questions.

Is certified medical care provided and available 24/7 to residents?

Does the facility have a dietitian on staff to address the nutritional needs of residents?

What is the ratio of on-site aides to the residents in their care? This is critical.

What is the ratio of males and females in their care? If 75% of the residents are of one gender, activities will be geared to their interests and participation and other residents may be left to shift themselves.

Absolutely insist on an unhurried tour of the facility, speak to several residents ask questions and be thorough.

Ask to have a meal in the resident dining room. Order from the menu. Observe service and wait times. If management is not open to your request, be wary.

Visit as many different facilities as you are able. Do your due diligence before selecting an assisted living facility.
